Book of Hours, FOL 48
Description
This particular leaf is from the Hours of the Virgin at Matins. The recto contains text which is made up of both a response and versicle from an antiphone. The text contained on the recto is most likely from the last part of the second lesson (Ecclesiasticus 24). The third lesson begins on the recto and continues onto the verso with the verso containing a versicle.
The text on the verso also contains the beginning lines of the Hymn of Saints Ambrose and Augustine.
There also appears to be part of a catchword on the bottom right of the verso. It seems to be "didatus" which makes up most of the partial last word found on that page, "candidatus" This word is broken up between the verso and the next leaf that follows.
The leaf also contains a number of initials in tight decorated squares that appear to be illuminated as well as containing red and blue ink. An illuminated bar takes up the whole of the margin on both the recto and the verso and contains acanthus leaves as well as floral elements in both blue and red ink. The text is written below the top line and there is biting of letters.
