Description

Book of Hours, Office for the Dead, at Matins: Second Nocturne, on Tuesdays and Fridays (Officium pro Defunctis, ad Matutinum: In Secundo Nocturno, pro feria tertia, et sexta). Northern France or the Netherlands, late 15th Century. Medieval manuscript leaf, parchment, containing text and decoration, including illuminated, foliated panels and illuminated initials. Gold illumination on decorative elements; floral decorative elements include acanthus, pink and white flowers, and blue flowers. The script is a Gothic textura with slightly diamond minims, 20 lines to the page with ink ruling; there are nine notable illuminated initials throughout the text. Text is a portion of Psalm 26 in St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate translation. Incipit: Exaudi domine vocem meam qua ... Explicit: ... terra viventium Expecta dominum Note from Denison University: "In Ege's original manuscript, this leaf followed what is now Leaf 48 in the Ohio University portfolio." Thus, the possibility is high that this side of the folio is the recto.

Transcription, Psalm 26:7-14, Clementine Vulgate Bible (modern chapter/verse numbers)
[7] Exaudi, Domine, vocem meam, qua clamavi ad te; miserere mei, et exaudi me. [8] Tibi dixit cor meum: Exquisivit te facies mea; faciem tuam, Domine, requiram. [9] Ne avertas faciem tuam a me; ne declines in ira a servo tuo. Adjutor meus esto; ne derelinquas me, neque despicias me, Deus salutaris meus. [10] Quoniam pater meus et mater mea dereliquerunt me; Dominus autem assumpsit me. [11] Legem pone mihi, Domine, in via tua, et dirige me in semitam rectam, propter inimicos meos. [12] Ne tradideris me in animas tribulantium me, quoniam insurrexerunt in me testes iniqui, et mentita est iniquitas sibi. [13] Credo videre bona Domini in terra viventium. [14] Expecta Dominum [...]

Translation Psalm 27[26]:7-14 (Revised Standard Version, Second Catholic Edition)
[7] Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me! [8] You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.” [9] Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my salvation! [10] For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me up. [11] Teach me your way, O LORD; and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. [12] Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence. [13] I believe that I shall see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living! [14] Wait for the LORD [...]
