Description

Leaf is from a French or Dutch Book of Hours from the late fifteenth century. Twenty long lines with illuminated floral boarder; ruling in red ink. Script Gothic Textualis, as indicated by diamond-shaped serifs at the feet of letters, representing a feature of formata-grade script. Additionally, the script shows a regular use of a round “s” at the ends of words with a 2-shaped “r” after “o.”

The leaf contains text from the Seven Penitential Psalms (also found in the Psalms of David), numbers 37 and 50. Recto 37:17-23 and begins 50:3. Verso continues 50:3-11.

The gold leaf appears to be flaking off, possibly due to normal wear and tear. There are eight 1-2 line initials in gold surrounded by a blue or red ink background on both the recto and verso. The blue and red colored backgrounds of the letters alternate, excepting for the recto where the “I” in “Intende” has a red background and the start of Psalms 50, “Miserere” with the letter “M,” is also red. The blue and red decoration scheme with extremely fine penwork is typical of Gothic manuscripts.

Recto Transcription:
Psalms of David 37:17-23
22 Non derelinquas me Domine Deus meus ne discesseris a me
23 Intende in adiutorium meum Domine salutis meae

Psalms of David 50:3
3 Miserere mei deus secundum magnam misericordiam tuam Et secundum multitudinem…

Verso Transcription:
Psalms of David 50:3-11
3 …miserationum tuarum: dele iniquitatem meam.
4 Amplius lava me ab iniquitate mea: et a peccato meo munda me.
9 Asperges me domine ysopo, et mundabor: lavabis me, et super nivem dealbabor.
10 Auditui meo dabis gaudium, et laetitiam: et exultabunt ossa humiliata.
11 Averte faciem tuam a peccatis meis: et omnes iniquitates meas dele.
